Gettin' Real

This blog will include my thoughts on what matters in life, at least from my ever humble perspective. "See matters in life as they really are, not what the powers-that-be tell you they are."

Whiskey Lullaby

Here is the link of Casey and me singing Whiskey Lullaby at Dawson Idol. You'll have to cut and paste, as You Tube is being a stinker about this one :)

Whenever I need to laugh...

I just look at this and thought I'd share. I swore off men in Speedos after taking the family cruise a few years back. Of course, many of these men were a step away from being sumo wrestlers sporting thong Speedos. I recall the sight making me want to gag a little.

Books to read...

Two books every Christian must read: The Poisonwood Bible and The Hiding Place. Just a suggestion...

I would blabber on about why, but let every person decide for himself I say. What I can say is that the first explains to the heart as to why legalism is so destructive within the "Christian" world (I saw so many wounded by fundamentalist legalism especially while at college) while the second is such a marvelous story of standing for the right thing, come hell or high water, and still trusting that God has a plan even when He seems so very silent.

Driving in Montana

I catered a tea party in Billings last weekend. Now, let me say here that I LOVE LOVE going on road trips by myself, especially now in my life. Truly, road trips allow me to solve all the world's problems, think, pray, sing, talk, listen to books on CD, and do every other action I can possibly dream up to make people passing me go, "Weirdo, three o'clock" like practicing a yoga move called "The Tiger" where you stretch your jaw muscles and punch breath out of your big, wide, open mouth (how much longer can I make this sentence). Yes, road trips, how lovely.

I told you all of my list of 100 things I love I'm currently working on. All of this brings me to #2: Driving in Montana. I actually got myself into a panic on this last Billings trip because at one given time I saw thirteen cars on the highway and couldn't keep my mouth open long enough. I thought, "Oh my gosh!!! Did I fall asleep and wake up in DC? OH NO!!!!" :) On Montana highways, it is quite rare to see more than one car on a day's highway drive at any given time-- hence my panic. I, of course, settled down after I let the cars pass and could get right back to listening to Eat Pray Love, which I really recommend even though I disagree with some key issues in the book. I've certainly been learning some from the book.

You Tube

I have finally entered the 21st century and become a part of You Tube. If you search my name and look for me singing Strawberry Wine you'll find the video. It was so fun to be a part of the Dawson Idol competiton!!

Even More Idol Pics

I sang "Crazy" this week. I tied for third with another great musician who I thought should have won first. Totally fun!

Life Song

I want to warn anybody who decides to preview this site. These pictures are huanting and beautiful all in the same to me. Maybe mostly because I watched Mom deminish to nothing but a bag of bones with a smile. Always with a smile. That was her. Never complaining, always looking ahead. Only one time in the three months that I was a mother hen to her (oh self) did I ever hear her complain. In fact, it was the ONLY time in my life I had ever heard Mom complain. She was a remarkable woman as I am sure the people in this German photographer's work were. Make sure to read the text that goes along with the pictures if you decide to venture into the site.

When I saw Mom in the coffin, she looked so majestic. She was always kind of regal looking in the way she perched her head and took on the world while living. And this was not ever taken from her--not even while laying in the coffin. She walked through death's valley with class and with more grace and dignity than I've ever seen a person portray in a scary situation. She was beautiful. She was haunting only because she looked so weak. She gave it all he she had because she wanted to live so much. Her whole life was lived for others. I will share a beautiful story about what happened at the viewing another time regarding this. Just beautiful. It still makes me weep.

In death, I know Mom is with Christ because of some conversations we had before she died. It was a beautiful process to see her come to the realization that salvation lies in the grace of God alone and in what His son did for her on Calvary. So, when I stared at her after death (yes, I could not stop staring and petting her fuzzy head and kissing her), I finally saw such a sweet peace on her face. I made the commitment to her right then and there to try my best to LIVE and make life count for things that matter. I made the commitment to sing again. To sing a life song that will hopefully leave half of the legacy that Mom left. I walked out of the viewing room, walked outside and let the sun shine on my face.

I did the same after looking at these photos.

April Fools

OK, I love April Fool's Day. I know, I'm a nerd. I always used to pull pranks on Momma, but since she is gone, my sister Dawn is the next best thing.
Dawn hosted a Bonco (some kind of dice rolling game) at her house and served a twice baked potato. Later that night, someone prank called her about potatoes and she was FREAKED. (we tend to be alike in the freak aspect) I couldn't help myself. I made this and taped it to her door. It was a total waste of time, but oh so worth it.

"Real funny, Kim," she said. :) Ha.

More Idol Pics

The top pic was Marcy, Sadie and me after the show.

It was so much fun tonight! I tell you what, I think (yes, I really do think) I am meant to sing. It's the biggest rush in the whole world...it has to be better than sex! :)

XOXOXO

Dawson Idol

Hey all, I got through the first round of Dawson Idol, a local singing competition. I sang my own VERY BLACK version of Amazing Grace for mom. I was amazed at the talent this Tuesday. Twenty (approx) people tried out and I think 13 or 14 of us made it through to the next round. There will be another round this Saturday and one the Saturday after that. One fella who went through asked me to sing a duet with him called "Whisky Lullaby" and it sounds great. I'll try to get some video footage posted after the performances. Later taters........

Top picture is me holding my ticket to the next round :)

A note on bowling shoes

Folks, it's finally official: bowling shoes do indeed make anyone look ridiculous. Of course the fact the Obama has appendages that go on for miles doesn't help the "look" either. Ha.
